85. Datagolf

Its very important to be open minded and to be able to change your mind in this game if the right situation presents. Let me give you an example involving a data source for golf. It relates to the website Datagolf. http://www.datagolf.com

When the site was first launched a few years ago it was incredibly average and I didn’t really understand what they were doing or trying to do. I didn’t used to post many tweets but I did tweet them asking what was going on as it didn’t make huge sense. The probabilities they were generating bore absolutely no resemblance to the actual betting markets at the time. I remember listening to a podcast with the creators of the website and they were clearly smart guys but they didn’t seem to really understand betting.

I was incredibly dismissive of them at the time and undoubtedly very arrogant, thinking what do they bring to the party. I just didn’t see it. However, they now possess arguably the most important website for golf betting. (official websites aside)

The way they now present data and the data they present is a fantastic resource for punters. Whether it be cut numbers or in running strokes gained numbers. It might be looking at an individual player and what their strengths and weaknesses are. So much good information.
They also have some very interesting articles explaining what they are doing and questioning some long held myths within the game. To summarise they have produced a brilliant website that adds real value to the community.

Obviously the version we see today isn’t the version they first launched but sometimes you have to just hold your hands up and say you were wrong. In a later tweet we will look at ‘biases’ which are also incredibly important within betting.
