86. Big wins

So much of betting/gambling is geared towards the ‘big win’. It is why the National Lottery/Euromillions have been so popular. The Football Pools back in the day. Its why the bookmakers are so keen to tell everyone about the acca that has returned a huge win for a tiny stake.

The Scoop 6 win. The big poker/DFS tournament. All offering huge wins for a relatively small outlay. I know I would let my mind wonder when I was 18 thinking what would I spend the money on if I won the lottery. It still happens now on occasions if a big enough sum is involved.

It is human nature and why these products are so popular. If I was only betting in very small amounts these are the bets that could potentially change your life so why not play them. Be aware though, these products are usually terrible value given huge margins.
You can win at all of them given certain scenarios and skillsets but as a general rule you will lose. It always blew my mind that people could play the National Lottery at the age of 16. It has now changed to 18 but is a great example of what is wrong with this industry. Scratchcards. Argh.

You had young kids introduced to gambling with the lure of big wins. They were products where the returns were absolutely horrendous. If you ever wanted a ‘gateway’ product to more serious gambling this was it. Why was it allowed?

We are seeing with other betting that if you grease enough palms, even the most ridiculous things can become a reality. The Government and Camelot got a nice cut from it, throw in some money for good causes and bingo you have a ludicrous situation.

With big wins in this scenario I am talking about for small stakes. I know I have used big wins as a way of the betting bank jumping up, but it did also involve big stakes so is not the same thing. The same applies to those who bet a lot of accas etc.

If you do have a big win understand what the main reason for it was. Luck, edge or a combination of the two. Just make sure if you have got incredibly fortunate that you do something constructive with the win. Make the most of your good fortune. Don’t give it all back.

Unless you have an edge on one of these products or are a tiny punter doing it for fun, try and avoid being lulled into the big win. It is hard not to be. The reality is that it will not end well. Grind away instead. The small wins can add up very quickly if you have an edge.
