44. Human

I think the story that is speculated on again today surrounding Phil Mickelson and his gambling losses just serves as a timely reminder that people are human and you really never know what is going on behind the scenes.

It has been rumoured for many many years that he had significant gambling debts ($40m+). It was no surprise given his propensity to gamble on the course, his links to Billy Walters, his demeanour and the way he played. How that all affected his on course performances is anyone’s guess and something we will never know. The reminder is this though. I see so many people on Twitter and other social media platforms slate players for their performances. Personal attacks. Stop being complete morons.

Players aren’t deliberately trying to play poorly, miss putts, make peoples bets lose. You have no idea what is going on in the lives of these people. Absolutely anything could be happening. Stuff that is far more important than sport and your bets.

They are human. Like the rest of us. I see Scott Hend get so frustrated by people who have bets or fantasy positions and then harass him and others on Twitter. Like most Aussies he seems very thick skinned and brushes it off. Others wont be able to do it so easily. Leave them alone.

If you are placing bets be grown up. Yes have an opinion on whether someone is good/bad, played well/poorly etc. Yes it can be incredibly frustrating. Just think about what you are saying though and how you are saying it. Be kind.

The quote about never judging someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes feels more apt than ever. If you are betting for a living you have to factor these things in and realise they are not machines. There are no sure things.

If you cant handle losing gracefully this isn’t the game for you. And Phil if you need some pointers on betting, I know of a few threads for you to read, (by the fireplace) that may help…..
