42. Quick wins

I guess it happens in all walks of life but never is it more abundantly clear than in betting that people just want the quick win. People seem to think that they are entitled to be able to find a quick and easy way to make extra money without putting in the requisite effort.

This is patently obvious by the popularity and success of many renowned betting journalists and tipsters. People are much more interested in who is going to win the next tournament rather than actually improving their own skillset so that they could potentially do it themselves.

I have even seen someone posting obviously fake betting slips suggesting they have bets on races for £200k at 6/1 etc on a midweek meeting. He has thousands of followers who lap it up despite it being pure fantasy. I must be old, as I just don’t get it.

It requires a lot of time and effort but the reality is you are learning next to nothing from just taking a tip someone has given to you. You may make some money in the short run but you will pretty likely give it all back and more. You will find yourself back at square one, at best.
You have to realise that almost no journalist or tipster will be the magic route to a pot of gold in the long run. There may be the odd exception but it will be very rare. There is no such thing as easy money and if it appears that way, it almost certainly isn’t the case.

You also wont find very successful people sharing how they get their edge unless their edge has disappeared or been seriously eroded. There is simply no incentive for them to do so and quite frankly they would be foolish to do so.

Go and read someone like Joseph Buchdahls tweets. Go and read his books/articles. He is just one example of the great content out there in the betting world where you can improve what you know and how to look/think about this game. Put the effort in.

It’s partly why I wanted to do these tweets. There wont be any mind blowing revelations as to how I find an edge. Just isn’t happening. However, what I hope is that some people will learn from some of the experiences I have had in this industry. With different hats on.

Maybe its just not making the same mistakes I have made. Maybe its thinking about things differently to how you currently do them. Something you hadn’t thought about. Maybe its just giving you an appreciation of what you are up against. Maybe a reality check.

Whatever it is, I hope it is something you can use to improve the betting you do and the skillset that you possess. If I can achieve that even with only one of the tweets, I will have done more than the huge majority of the journalists and tipsters out there. I find it absolutely incredible how little any of them care about their customers/subscribers/readers. None of them are improving their knowledgebase or skillset. Just mindless selections. Maybe I am just cynical and they are incentivised not to do so. or incapable.

I am not for one moment thinking that everyone is suddenly going to become a long term winner. Maybe just not losing at such a fast rate is a positive outcome. In such a morally questionable industry it is nice to try and help people. Give something back.
