When talking about bet acceptance delays I am talking about the delay that occurs from when a punter presses bet submit to when the punter gets a decision back from a bookmaker as to whether the bet was accepted or declined. What happens is scandalous.
Let’s put some context on this. It really applies to bookmakers and not exchanges. It is really only relevant when betting in running. With exchanges it is common knowledge what the delays are in running for various sports and they don’t change.
With bookmakers the situation is very different. There is nowhere where bookmakers publish what the bet acceptance delays are for any event. The bookmaker will have internal bet delays. In practice these delays are essential to offer in play markets.
It’s essential that bookmaker prices aren’t picked off by those with access to information faster than them. However, the bookmakers are happy to extend these delays way beyond what they need. The reason is very simple. They can free role the customer.
If the market goes in the favour of the punter the bookmaker will simply reject the bet and offer the customer a new bet at the updated shorter odds. If the market goes the other way the bookmaker will accept the bet to the detriment of the punter.
It’s absolutely outrageous that this type of behaviour isn’t clamped down on. All the bookmakers are using third party companies to manage their in play products whether that be Betradar, Bet Genius, IMG, etc. They are sending people to the venues around the world relaying the data.
Yes latency (how long it takes for the data to be relayed) can be impacted by internet connections/phone signals/quality of operator at the venue but on the whole the information is relayed within 1/2 seconds. This is fed into automated systems that generate prices.
Bookmakers as usual are happy to completely rip off punters without a care in the world. No one says anything. The Gambling Commission is meant to promote fair betting. Says it all.
As a pro punter if you bet in running you have to be so aware of data latency at all times. It is absolutely fundamental to whatever you do.it is often the difference between being profitable and not. I will talk more about courtsiding in other tweets.
