14. US Masters

With the US Masters and Augusta later in the week I thought I would write a couple of thoughts about the event and what I believe you need to be looking for if betting on it. I wont be giving tips per se but more just pointers. This is the event I have bet more on than any other.

The single biggest factor for me is approach/iron play. I always think of the Augusta greens as greens within greens. You have to be able to hit the ball into certain quadrants of the greens. It isn’t good enough to just hit the greens and potentially leave yourself a nightmare putt.

Everyone always talks about the greens and assumes you need to be a good putter to win here. You don’t. Many of the winners have been incredibly average putters. Hideki, Bubba, Garcia, Scott, Charl. Others who have contended like Rose, Westwood, Zalatoris, Cabrera etc similar.

You have to be good at lag putting. You obv have to hole out well from 6ft and in but most of these guys are very good at that. It is much more important to be leaving yourself in the right spots on greens. If you do miss you have to miss in the right places.

Obviously bombing it off the tee will help as you will have shorter irons into the greens but you still need to be so precise with your irons shots. When you look at the previous winners it is littered with incredible iron players like Tiger, Phil, Spieth, Hideki, Scott, Garcia etc.

You have to hit fairways to be able to hit the right iron shots that you need. The fairways are wide but if you miss on certain holes like 5, 11 etc you are likely to drop shots. These are big fairways though by Tour standards. Back the elite iron players.

Remember if betting in running it is so hard to play catch up on that back 9 on a Sunday afternoon as it is so easy for everyone. Everyone is making birdies galore. Enjoy and its amazing to see Tiger back.
