194. Specialisation (2)

2024 provides an event that is perfect for specialisation. These are the sorts of events you should be targeting. Once every four years when the bookmakers feel obliged to offer events but really don’t want to. I am of course talking about the 2024 Olympic Games which starts on 26th July.

The Olympic Games will provide so many good betting opportunities for those willing to put the work in. There are so many different sports and events within them. The hard work has to start now though. Like anything in this game hard work and a willing to grind will be rewarded.

You have to look at it from a bookmakers perspective. They feel obliged to offer markets on sports they really don’t want to. If they aren’t taking the prices from a third party and do it themselves it will tend to be the more junior traders looking after these markets. Even the third party providers who will be offering pricing for these events to certain bookmakers won’t necessarily have their best traders on this stuff. They will all be focused on the bigger sports.

One of the hardest problems you face as a punter will be getting on these prices and in these markets. It’s why it is important to think about how best to combat that now. Not the day before the first event starts. Prime accounts. Get accounts KYC’ed. Find runners.

Pick the events carefully that you want to be betting on. There is no point specialising in Rhythmic Gymnastics or Artistic Swimming. No one will offer markets for those. You want the sports that are more mainstream in the country where you will be betting. In the UK that might be Athletics, Cycling, Swimming. Maybe take a look at a sport like Rowing. Or Boxing.

The bookmakers will feel obliged to offer these markets as they will get lots of media attention. Put the time and effort in to fully understand all the rules. All the various nuances. Seek out as much information as you can about the competitors or teams. General information might be thin on the ground. It’s where the hard work gets rewarded. Get creative.

These events won’t be worthwhile for the big syndicates to get involved with. That means price discovery won’t happen in the way it does for normal, more mainstream markets. You against junior traders rather than you against syndicates who are paying tens of millions of pounds for the best modellers.

If nothing else it is fun trying to find edges in markets like these. Win or lose you will have done the work yourself.
