173. Both Outcomes

There should be a requirement on all bookmakers to offer both sides of a bet. It is so tiring seeing bookmakers taking advantage of customers by offering only one side of a bet especially on things like specials. We saw it a couple of weeks ago with the US Open Golf and the Ashes 1st Test. A whole series of specials offered with ‘Yes’ as the only option to bet. It might be something like Rahm, Scheffler and Rory all to score less than 69 in the 1st Rd. You could only back ‘Yes’ at 4/1.

Nearly all these markets offer horrendous value to a customer. There should be a requirement for the bookmaker to offer prices for ‘No’ to happen as well as ‘Yes’. You would suddenly find the prices improve dramatically for the customer or not offered at all.  As a general rule as a punter you should avoid these markets unless you really know what you are doing. Just as a sense check go and use a betting calculator. If you have three outcomes at 4/1 that is the equivalent of each player being priced at 4/5, 4/6 and 4/6. Probably not quite so appealing when broken down like that. To a 100% book the ‘No’ would be 1/4. Obviously that isnt going to happen but you wouldn’t see the bookmaker offer 1/6 or even 1/7 on this sort of market, which says everything you need to know.

It would be very easy for regulators to mandate this sort of stuff but they wont. There are so many small things they can fix to improve the punter experience. Improve the fairness and openness. Chocolate teapots spring to mind.

I take the view that if the bookmaker is promoting a special or a boost then there is a reason and they should be avoided.

The o ly specials I do is when an odds on shot is boosted to even money, as I believe that is giving a true edge any thoughts on that?

    1. They do tend to be. If you can access them/get on they are some very easy money. Really good value. You can see that by looking what the price should be roughly with other bookies.
