91. Favourite Bet

This would only be for recent years but it is also incredibly relevant today and you will see why later in the tweet. It is not the bet that made the most money but was definitely one of the most satisfying. It incorporates a lot of the info in the tweets I have talked about.

I have always been a massive Aston Villa fan. What it means is that you are constantly reading forums and watching games getting information. As a general rule despite having a lot of knowledge I try and avoid placing bets on them as it can be tough to view them objectively.

I have often talked about picking off the easier markets further down the footballing food chain where the information is less readily available. That was the case here when getting involved last year when Villa U23s went to play at Stoke U23s.

You have to understand that with U23 football the team strength can vary massively due to players playing in the First team or being out on loan etc. On that day Villa had Chukwuemeka (Both Carney and his brother Caleb), Iroegbunam, Philogene-Bidace, and Aaron Ramsey amongst others. They also had three very highly regarded defenders inc Bogarde and the keeper Sinisalo is also an International for Finland. Most of these names wont mean much to most people. Its relevant today because Carney Chukwuemeka has just been sold to Chelsea for £20m. He will be a superstar. As will Iroegbunam (will play for Villa 1st team this yr) and Aaron Ramsey (Jacobs younger brother who is regarded more highly). That midfield trio took England to U19 glory earlier this summer. Philogene-Bidace who was brilliant on loan last year at Stoke and at Cardiff this year. They were a generational bunch of kids playing against an average Stoke team that included Oakley-Boothe from Spurs. I almost fell off my chair when I saw they were 2.9. I backed them down to about 2.5.

It was one of these tricky situations where it is tough to know exactly what price they should have been. All I knew was that they should have been odds on. The price was just very wrong. These kids were far better than the market realised.

You spend ages wondering if you have missed something. Look back through Stokes team again and again. Bets placed and you hope you haven’t messed up. They were 7-0 up after 57 mins before settling on an 8-0 win.

As always the only downside was that I was limited somewhat in terms of getting on as much as I wanted. Nevertheless its often these sorts of bets that actually bring more enjoyment than the bigger ,more high profile ones.
