45. Working Hours

There are parts of the life of a pro punter that are great but one aspect that can really grate after a while are the time commitments/sacrifices that you have to make. Some of it will depend on what sports you bet on and how you are placing those bets.

As a general rule though it will involve a lot of hours, an awful lot of weekend work and potentially even overnight work. Every Sunday being taken up by golf betting for example gets pretty tiresome for the wife and understandably so after ten+ years.

In this game though you have to make sacrifices to make it pay. You are not always going to be successful with everything you try. You sometimes have to try it though, as the upside can be so big if it does work out well.

A good example of this would be in running NBA betting. We thought that there was an opportunity with it. It involved the horrendous hours of roughly 11pm – 6am most days. This was in addition to everything else.

It is absolutely brutal getting an hour or two of sleep before it starts. An hour in the morning before taking the kids to nursery. Then get a couple more hours before other work.
As it turns out it didn’t pay, but you have to be willing to make sacrifices to try and make aspects of this game pay. There is often a strong correlation between effort and results. This isn’t a 9-5 industry.
