39. Commentators

One thing you will see time and time again when watching top class sport is how poor and uninformed the commentators are. So many of them are former players and there is the assumption that they will know what they are talking about. They don’t.

They will roll out the same tiresome and incorrect narratives for certain players/teams or situations.. It was fine many years ago as people didn’t know any different but now everyone has access to most of the data.

Do not take what you hear from the so called experts at face value. Lets take golf for example. A player may be 100 yards out. So often you hear them say he will be disappointed if he doesn’t hit this within 6ft. They make it sound like it should be more than 50% of the time.

The reality is that on the PGA Tour from 100 yards a player will only hit it inside 6ft, 13% of the time! (Thanks Lou Stagner) You hear these sorts of wild assumptions time and time again throughout a round. They really should know so much better by now. There can be no excuses and it always amazes me that sports haven’t moved with the times more and employ people who actually know what they are talking about. It really is an old boys network.
It is not limited to just golf but you see it across all sports. None are exempt. You are also seeing it increasingly as betting becomes more of a feature on broadcasts. The betting knowledge is laughable at times.

I should give a special mention at this stage to some of the data providers who will put their name to the chances of something happening during a match. This was sent to me yday by a friend and is something we have laughed about for years. Oracle Cloud in the Spurs/Leics game suggested Spurs win 48% of the time. The price was 1.4 (71%) on BF. Spurs at 1-0 up were 1.15 (87%) on BF and Oracle has it at 71%. I mean these are being put out there as a credible source. They are absolute garbage.

These companies and broadcasters have to do better. They owe it to their paying customers. As a punter do your own research, understand the real numbers and ignore the commentators.
