156. Golden Accounts

I have been asked on more than one occasion recently what I mean when I referred to something as a “Golden Bet365 account”. It’s quite simple and the concept is pretty crazy, It is an account where you get all sorts of perks and benefits. You get rebates on losses, VIP tickets to sporting events, bonuses paid as cash, consumer products like Ipads, concierge services, Christmas hampers. If you are really lucky you will get a golden ticket to Charlies Chocolate Factory. I am of course being incredibly facetious. The irony being that all the perks listed are real life ones that betting companies will offer to VIP clients. Albeit not so much now.

A ‘golden account’ doesn’t refer to any of the above. Wait for it. It is simply an account where you can pretty much bet without limits. It shows you the state of the industry, that such an account is so revered. With the Bet365 account I could easily have £10k+ on a golfer, £10k+ on a horse, £50k+ on a football match. You name it. They thought the person operating the account was a complete mug. They were willing to take any bet they could. It just highlights the issue the industry has and its one sided nature. Plenty of other Bet365 accounts have been closed within a matter of a few bets. Win even a small amount and restricted. Lose big, bet what you like.

The account obviously wasn’t in my name. I also never logged onto the account or had any interactions on it. It becomes a really murky subject and it was highlighted by the Bet365/McCann court case a few years ago. The industry has created this mess. So many account restrictions have caused people to get creative. Crucially, the imbalance between how winners and losers are treated.

Ultimately, if a bookmaker trusted the prices they were offering it wouldn’t matter who was taking them. That is the crux of the issue.  It does raise some interesting questions relating to ‘beard’ accounts. I will save that for a different tweet. In the meantime the fact that accounts exist almost without limits says everything. Only losers are welcome in this industry.
