131. Bookmakers (5)

The question I am asked more than anything else is why I have decided to do these tweets. I have seen so many examples in recent days of exactly why I decided to do these tweets and wanted to help bring it to as large an audience as possible.

Whether it be Rufus and his withdrawal issues from BetMGM in the USA (fwiw the Americans are in for a shock when they see the scale and type of behaviour that awaits them). Or SBC and the unsolicited use of credit reference agencies (Transunion) by Unibet. Or others requesting 90 days worth of bank statements or P60’s for withdrawals. Betr cancelling promotions in Australia. Inactivity fees. Palpable errors. We have seen all sorts of shitty behaviour by bookmakers in recent days. The problem is that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

I had hoped that with the Gambling Commission (GC) introducing rules about verification requests that some of this stuff would have improved. Clearly the bookmakers have no respect for the GC and continue in their brazen way. The GC simply isn’t doing enough to protect the punter.

Why I wanted to do these tweets was to help lend a voice to a few others out there who do a great job trying to fight the fight. A fruitless and thankless task at times. Jimmy Justice, SBC, Caan Berry to name but three. It needs more though. A lot more. It needs the bigger Twitter accounts to become far more involved in actually holding these companies to account for these types of behaviours. Obviously, they wont as they are paid advocates of the bookmaker fraternity. So I wont hold my breathe.

I don’t get paid by anyone to write these tweets calling out these behaviours. I don’t get paid for writing tweets to try and help the masses become wiser, better punters. I do it because I believe it is the right thing to do.

Maybe some of the bigger accounts who are affiliated with some of these companies should take a long look at what they are doing being associated with these brands. If you are promoting these companies you are endorsing this type of behaviour. No shades of grey. This doesn’t just apply to those we see all the time. If you are a tipster and endorsing people placing bets at Unibet or 10bet etc then you are as culpable in this as they are. You are saying you think the bookmaker is fine and giving it credibility.  Rufus showed that using his large following and his reputation within the industry that it can have an impact. Whilst it may only resolve his issues for now it shows that they are bothered by the public reaction to it. It can make a difference.

Punters need a safe environment where they can place bets without fear of being restricted to pennies after a couple of winners, endless KYC checks, delayed withdrawals, funds confiscated, bet acceptance delays, false palpable bet claims, etc. It’s surely not too much to ask for.
