I cannot stress enough the importance of being in the right frame of mind when betting. It applies to whether it is pre off betting or trading in running. Your mind has to be super clear to make optimal decisions. External influences are real. We all have so many other things going on in our lives, that at times, it can be tough to properly focus on what we need to.
I tend to find it goes one of two ways. The betting/trading can be a great way of getting away from those other issues. A timely distraction. Or we can make poor decisions because we are not properly focused on what we need to be. It just exacerbates any issues. It’s actually where the more automated your systems are the more it helps. Less decision making and less emotions.
One of the problems is that you feel like you have to trade every market available to you. You have to bet every time you have an edge. It is much better to not place any bets, than placing poor bets/trading a market poorly because you were in the wrong frame of mind.
The big one for me over the years is tiredness. How can you possibly expect to make good decisions if you have had 2/3 hours sleep because you have been awake all night looking after a crying baby? You cant. I hate being sat there just going through the motions.
Whilst not always easy or practical you have to give yourself a chance to be successful. This is a tough game. There is always another day or market.
