88. Apathy

One of the problems I find in this industry is overwhelming apathy towards it. Day in day out, all you read about and see first hand is an industry that is completely broken on every imaginable level. It literally becomes about making money, freedom and the enjoyment sport brings.

Every level you look at (I have covered the various pts in much more detail in other tweets). Lets start with bookmakers and the ridiculous predatory practices that they employ. Whether it be bet restrictions, KYC/withdrawal issues, In play delays, palpable errors, data breaches, free bets etc.

The list is so long. So many deplorable practices that they get away with and no one holds them to account. Whether it be the regulators, who are simply not fit for purpose. Gambling is meant to be conducted in a fair and safe manner. Laughable.

Nothing about what happens at the moment is fair. We have the looming regulation regarding affordability checks that could destroy the game. I have zero confidence the regulators will make the right decisions. In the meantime the bookmakers take advantage of that situation. It is comical tbh. The media turn a blind eye to it all so no one is held to account. That’s partly because they are in the pockets of the bookmakers. You have an industry littered with complete frauds giving out tips to people. Absolute scams.

You have an industry littered with so called experts who give out betting advice who don’t even bet themselves. You have punters who don’t want to help themselves. Hoping for some magic money tree. It is such a depressing industry on so many levels.

The idea behind these tweets was to try and help people. Very few people make this game pay so if I could give a little back then great. I could tell you a story about how I contacted someone very prominent in the industry about what I was doing and how I thought it would
be potentially interesting/beneficial for their readership/followers. It was someone who I had exchanged DMs with previously about a different subject. I like to think that their readership would have learnt something from the 87 tweets so far. Obviously, it was of no interest to
them and the only conclusion I could draw was that despite claims to the contrary, that they don’t actually care about what their readership knows. No interest in them being more knowledgeable or potentially learning things. Obviously it is everyone’s prerogative to do what they see fit.

I understand that every retweet could affect someone’s brand if they are seen endorsing something they don’t like. It just feels like the whole industry is smoke and mirrors. It’s the type of thing that just reaffirms the apathy towards the industry.

Its one thing people have to understand if coming into the industry. It is morally very questionable and the things you see, will leave you dumbfounded. Try and stay positive in the face of it all. It can be tough but you have to try and do the things that you believe are right.
