These are known as Bet Builders in the UK and Same Game Parlays in America. First let me say I will talk about Multiples in a separate tweet. Bet Builders are in essence a multiple or accumulator on different markets on the same match.
These are a relatively new phenomenon. The reason being is that in previous years bookmakers would never allow bets on what were known as related contingencies. They are effectively bets that affect the outcome of another bet.
An example might be Man City to win the Champions League Outright and Man City to win their Quarter Final match. Obviously, if they win that Quarter Final match it affects the price they will be in the outright markets.
Bookmakers have been pretty good over the years at limiting related contingency bets although a few have slipped through the net. So you wonder why are they now offering something where the result of one bet will clearly impact the result of another.
The tech teams have gone away and actually come up with something pretty clever and it enables people to place these related contingency bets within the same match. Maybe something like Salah to score, Salah to be booked, there to be 3+ bookings, 3+ goals.
It all looks great and you can very quickly build up to a situation where you get three figure odds. That holds huge appeal for the masses. However, these bet builders are incredibly sneaky and incredibly poor value for the customer.
The margins built into these products are enormous and also because the odds increase very quickly people aren’t as price sensitive as they might be otherwise. They wont let you do all markets and often not all selections.
The only time the SGP can become value is what happened recently with Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors. A tweet was sent out shortly before the game that Green was injured, but would start, but only play for a few seconds before coming off the court.
It was in tribute to his teammate Klay Thompson who had been out injured for almost 3 years and was returning. People cottoned onto this and placed a lot of SGP on his pts totals, assists, rebounds etc being under on all. It cost some of the big American bookmakers
plenty. It is tough to have any sympathy for them, that they had their pants pulled down, given what poor value these markets normally offer.
As a general rule avoid Bet Builders and Same Game Parlays at all costs.
