One thing that happens very quickly when betting and particularly when betting for a living, is losing all sense of the value of money. This problem has only got worse as betting moves increasingly online and onto mobile devices.
Money literally just becomes numbers on a screen. That in itself can become incredibly dangerous. The problem is that there is really no way to get around the issue. I think as a general rule keep the minimum you need in any accounts. Its good practice anyway.
This may well change though with the introduction of affordability checks and deposit limits. There are hidden consequences that people don’t think about. Rather than regular deposits people will just keep more money in their account until it has gone.
The bookmakers love it and anytime they love something, it should send huge warning signs. The other thing I find that helps sometimes is to place a few cash bets. See and feel what £1000 actually looks like again. Buy something that puts the money into context.
The reality though is it will happen, happen pretty quickly and is something you just have to accept as part of the game.
